CARDS

WRITTEN BY: MOTHUSI MOKOTO AND PAUL GROOTBOOM
DIRECTED BY: PAUL GROOTBOOM

CARDS, the hit drama, finally comes to Hillbrow for a three week season at the Windybrow Theatre.

Adapted Paul Grootboom from an original script by Mothusi Mokoto, CARDS presents a new approach to South African theatre-making. No doubt, staging CARDS in Hillbrow will bring a new dimension to this production and is well worth the trouble for those who have seen it before; and a second chance to see this outstanding piece for those who missed it last year when it played at The Market.

Set in the Wild Cats Night Club in Hillbrow, CARDS follows the lives of the prostitutes who ‘work’ there and Mubara, the Nigerian owner of the club. Mubara is in trouble with the law for his black market dealings when one of his crime associates turns state witness against him. This sets off a bizarre series of events…

The play touches on very real issues like AIDS and the lack of choice in the prostitution ‘industry’. Themes that are tackled include the ownership of people, love and many others. CARDS explores a world in the thrall of power and riches, a culture where human values and moral codes are mocked and have no usefulness.

Containing explicit sex scenes, nudity, violence and language that may offend, CARDS is not recommended for anyone younger than eighteen and parental guidance is strongly advised.
