During 2006 the Windybrow Theatre initiated programmes aimed at developing the writing skills of aspirant writers. The two programmes – a spoken word programme and a programme for playwrights – were designed to impart both technical skills and artistic insight in the development of scripts for the stage. Both programmes were developed for the Windybrow by poet and academic, Kgafela Oa Mogogodi.
Twenty aspirant writers were selected to participate in these intensive, 9-month development programmes. During this process each of the students worked on and finalised a script for a play or a spoken word performance.
A key aspect of these programmes was the opportunity for interaction between the students and experienced writers and theatre practitioners who tutored and mentored them. Among the tutors and mentors were acclaimed artists like Jerry Mofokeng, Zenzi Mbuli, Don Mattera, Lesego Rampolokeng, Xoli Norman, Matshilo Motsei, Nokuthula Mazibuko, Lefifi Tladi and Tshepo Oa Mamatu.
As a culmination of this exciting initiative, 12 scripts have been chosen for further development and performance at the Windybrow Theatre; 9 of these are plays and 3 are spoken word pieces.
Please join us in welcoming 12 new and talented writers. May their words ring loud and true!
